Oscar Pistorius, double amputee competing in the Summer Olympics 2012
It's Olympic fever time and I've been eagerly awaiting to see is one of my fave runners Usain Bolt was gonna take the gold (he did) and was amazed by so many athletes this year but this guy Oscar Pistorius really took the cake. If you've been following the coverage there's no doubt you've been duly impressed as well. Also hearing him speak after not placing yesterday was refreshing- a true gentleman and honorable sportsman. Even if the Olympics are making you feel lazy, fat and um...lazy...it's a great time to tap into some of the magic of setting goals. Not necessarily on track and field but in life and in art plunging.
If you think about it all the runners have a goal in mind- get across a finish line in the best time they can. If there is no finish line what do you think happens? They just keep running? They decide not to run? There needs to be a finish line in a race. In this case you are the runner and you are your own competitor. The finish line is your goal so make one. The goal is to beat yourself.
This morning I woke up thinking about my own running routine and how lazy I have been about it. So I said to myself "go for 2.5 miles today no matter what" and then plan to build from there. I have plateaued and gotten lazy and haven't seen a 3 miler in a looong time. You have to put a goal in place and then just go like a torpedo to it's mark- focus and hit that goal.
I ended up doing 2.84 today. By Friday I will do 3 miles. I will. That is my goal.
I also have been a little lazy in the studio. Summer heat does that to me. So this weekend I decided I needed to accomplish 9 small works in a week to make myself feel like a functioning working artist again. I primered up 7 pieces of vinyl and 2 small 9" x 12" canvases and hung them on the wall where I can see them, grab them, work on them, and move on to next one- assembly line style.
Like a torpedo to it's mark. It is as simple as that. Want it- say it- do it. Done.
What is your goal and what are you doing this very day to inch closer to it?
